Orange and Roman stuff

Day 3 of our Provencal adventure dawned cloudy and chilly.  What happened to the sun?  However, it wasn't raining so we set off for another place we had been meaning to visit these past several years - Orange.

A short if moderately hair-raising (I wasn't driving) trip up the autoroute and we were there. An intact Roman theatre more than 2000 years old with seating for 9000 people and a magnificent statue of emperor Augustus  looking down on the performances.  We climbed to the highest row of seats and could clearly hear the people near the stage.  A fantastic place.

Lunch was a simple "formule express" but very good nonetheless.  Thai chicken and rice for me and warm savoury tart for the bearded one.  Ubiquitous chocolate mousse and tarte tatin (again!) finished us off and we set out to walk to the triumphal arch on the edge of town.  Now those of you who know the bearded one will know of his penchant for charity shops and lo and behold; what should we come across, but exactly that - a rare thing in France.  In we went to find an Aladin's cave of junk treasures.  No DVDs to his disappointment; but that was short lived as we found 2 retro Pastis jugs for almost no money.  Home via normal roads, as the autoroutes are just scary, via the Cigale bakery for some teatime treats.  All in all another excellent day "en Provence".
